Caterpillar
2010
Client: Liverpool City Council, Brown field site - re-greening housing estates, Mab Lane
Material: Oak
Caterpillar was developed with local school children and designed to be a tactile play sculpture that could also be used as seating for the local park.
It’s one of my favourite pieces mainly because I almost stopped the child who created the design because I didn’t think a caterpillar would be an appropriate sculpture! It wasn’t until I sat looking at all the designs that I realised how beautiful and appropriate the piece would be if created from oak on a large scale.
It re-enforced the importance of not interfering with my own preconceptions of what is or what isn’t sculpture or art.
