Client: British Waterways, South Shropshire Un-ion Canal, Nantwich
Material: Re-claimed Greenheart
Winner of the 2006 BURA award, for best community arts project.
Commissioned to create a piece of work to be sited on the canal side at Nantwich. What struck me during a site visit was the the deep notches in the steel shanks on the corners of the bridges caused by the thousands of horses that would have once walked the towpath.
The project involved many people from the local community including primary and secondary schools, I worked with the pickled herring theatre company developing a story, puppets and later a performance along the canal.
The piece was fabricated in residence at Reaceheath agricultural college and was created from recycled lock-gates, the wood formed the bulk of the piece and the steel was used for the main and tail.
